Michele May

Head of History and Geography Department

Head of the History and Geography department for the secondary level at SIS, Michele May has taught all levels from 6eme to Terminale, as well as 1ere Cambridge.  She has been teaching at SIS since 2003 and particularly enjoys teaching the 5e geography unit on Kenya and sustainable development as well as the OIB theme which focuses on U.S. foreign policy since World War I. Mrs. May organizes the annual 1ere U.S. Exchange between the SIS and Mount Prospect High School in Illinois.

Although Mrs. May was raised in the U.S., she was born in Heidelberg, Germany (ask her why!).  Interested in history and French from an early age, the two areas came together as she pursued her post-secondary studies. She received a B.A. from the University of Portland in 1992, a M.A. from the Villanova University in 1993 and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2010.  Her professional education experience includes assisting in a Montessori preschool classroom, providing academic advising for international students in the U.S., and teaching undergraduate history courses at Clark College, Marylhurst University, and the University of Illinois.  She enjoys her interactions with SIS students because of the inter-cultural dynamic and the students’ engagement and enthusiasm.

Favorite historical person/era?  Franklin D. Roosevelt due to his role in developing a system of social security for the U.S. (however imperfect) and his ability to lead by keeping the big-picture in view.

Favorite area of geography? Sustainable development, both the advantages and the pitfalls.

Favorite book? Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery and The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck

Favorite quotes?

"I am not afraid of storms for I am learning how to sail by ship" - Louisa May Alcott

"Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm."- Abraham Lincoln
