Embracing Literacy During Lockdown

by Anne Cornell-Pouret

PARIS (April 27, 2020)— For the past two months, students from our 6ème, 4ème and 2nde anglophone classes have been participating in a read-a-thon to raise money for Room to Read ®— a non-profit organization that helps children in developing countries improve their literacy skills and promotes gender equality in education. Due to the Covid-19 crisis, the deadline has been extended enabling our students to read more books while staying at home.

Edwin in 6e at the Collège Emile Verhaeren in Saint-Cloud explained that “having a motivation to read made me discover a lot of new books”. This sentiment was echoed by his classmate Maude, “What I liked was to tell myself that every book, chapter and page I read counted for those children. I have read 5 books!” Favorite reads include a wide selection of novels such as Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan, the World Football Records, ABC Murders by Agatha Christie, The Letter for the King by Tonke Dragt, The Witcher books by Andrzej Sapkowski and the Skulduggery Pleasant series by Derek Landy. Malia in 4e at Collège de Sèvres added that “it was fun because we got to do it on our own time and without obligation; you could read whenever you wanted."

Pressing the pause button during the current lockdown in France has a silver lining. Marc in 6ème at the College Emile Verhaeren commented that “in normal life, you don’t have time to read a lot.” According to a student in 4ème from Collège de Sèvres, “It was nice spending time reading in the sun rather than being slumped in front of a TV.” One student has already read 19 books since the start of the read-a-thon and enthusiastically declared that “it was a brilliant idea!”

With so many children around the world out of school, there has never been a more urgent need to facilitate learning especially in schools in low-income communities. Geetha Murali, CEO of Room to Read® stated, “We are not giving up on educating the world’s most vulnerable children.” There is no time like the present to create world change.”
